Who Is Dr. Robert Lesslie? Doctor, Wife and Grandkids Shot by Phillip Adams in South Carolina Shooting

Dr. Robert Lesslie was one of the victims killed in a mass shooting on Wednesday in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, Lesslie, his wife Barbara and their two grandchildren were found dead in their home at around 5 p.m. local time, on Wednesday.

Another person was also killed in the incident.

“James Lewis of Gastonia, was working at the home & died from gunshot wounds,” the York County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a tweet.

Police have identified Philip Adams, a former NFL cornerback as the suspected shooter who killed Lesslie, his family and Lewis. Adams took his own life Thursday morning, according to police.

Lesslie was the medical director and founder of Riverview Hospice and Palliative Care in Rock Hill. According to the medical center’s website, Lesslie has been practicing in Rock Hill since 1981, after receiving his medical degree from Medical University of South Carolina. He later earned his master’s degree in public health from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1999.

He previously worked as the chief resident at the Charlotte Memorial Hospital in North Carolina.

“Dr. Lesslie is board-certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine,” read his bio. “He is a certified Medical Review Officer for drug and alcohol testing and a Certified Medical Examiner for the Department of Transportation. For more than a decade, he has been writing newspaper and magazine columns and human-interest stories.”

Outside of his work in the medical field, Lesslie lived in Rock Hill with his wife alongside a golden retriever named Moses and several farm animals such as mini horses, donkeys and chickens.

“They have four grown children and eight growing grandchildren. He enjoys golfing, traveling and bagpiping. He is a regular columnist for YC magazine, an active member of his church, as well as an accomplished author. His series of books offer hope and wisdom for his readers’ overall health and well being based on his years of experience in the field of medicine,” his bio read.

During a press conference on Thursday, York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson read a statement issued by Lesslie’s family:

“The four Lesslie siblings wrote this statement: On behalf of the Lesslie, Alexander, and Kulbok clans, we would like to address the outpouring of heartbreak, shock, grief, and support from our family, friends, and community. We are truly in the midst of the unimaginable. The losses we are suffering cannot be uttered at this time. While we know there are no answers that will satisfy the question ‘why,’ we are sure of one thing: we do not grieve as those without hope. Our hope is found in the promise of Jesus Christ, and we are enveloped by peace that surpasses all understanding. To that end, our hearts are bent toward forgiveness and peace. Toward love and connectedness. Toward celebration and unity. We honor all of those involved in this story with prayers and compassion specifically for the Shook family, the Lewis family, and the Adams family.”
