Purple Ribbon Campaign Launches Today

Two mothers who know the pain of losing a loved one to violence will be on hand for a flag-raising ceremony today at Confederation Building to mark the start of 16 days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Debbie Hibbs’ daughter Juliane was shot to death, along with her fiance Vince Dillon outside a busy strip mall in Conception Bay South in October of 2013.

The shooter was a man she had been in a relationship with years earlier.

Lisa Lake’s daughter Cortney died after she disappeared in June of 2017. She was last seen getting into a pickup matching the description of Philip Smith. He was identified by police as the lone suspect in the case. He was found dead a few months later. Lake’s body was never found.

Today’s Purple Ribbon Flag Raising event gets underway this morning at 11:00 outside Confederation Building. VOCM News will be there.
