Patched Potholes and Busted Tires: PCs Call Attention to Deteriorating State of NL Roads

PC leader David Brazil is calling attention to the state of some roads throughout the province following revelations that two recommendations from the Auditor General in 2017 to improve road conditions have not been implemented.

Brazil called members of the media to Bennett’s Road in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s to showcase potholes that he says have been responsible for at least four busted tires. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the potholes had been filled in with the bags used as a temporary fix to the problem sticking out of the new asphalt.

Brazil contends that such issues can be seen across the province. He cites the CAA’s 2021 list of worst roads in Atlantic Canada, on which roads from this province appear four times. He says that’s embarrassing and expensive for residents.

Brazil references 2017 recommendations from the AG calling for a structured maintenance program and system to track which roads need work. He calls the fact that those recommendations have not implemented “baffling,” and he is calling on the department to answer why the recommendations haven’t been acted on.
