Opposition members, including PC, NDP, and independents, have proposed new terms of reference and makeup for the All-Party Committee on modernizing the elections act. The group submitted their proposal to Justice Minister John Hogan earlier today.
The changes would require the equal representation of all registered political parties and an equal number of independents. As well, two members of the general public—who are recognized for their knowledge of the democratic process and who are politically nonpartisan, will also join the committee.
In a joint release, the group says the changes will improve transparency, increase independence, and overall results for the people of the province.
PC MHA Barry Petten says the subject of reviewing the election is nonpartisan. He says this is about the public and not about political allegiance. He states that their purpose is to expose any wrongs that happened to make sure they don’t happen again.
